With a wide grip that's perfect for little hands, the Tag reader adds a unique element to story time. The included book, Ozzie and Mack, features the rhyming adventures of Ozzie Otter and his playful animal friends. Text for this book is preloaded onto the Tag reader, so as soon as you load two AAA batteries (not included) into the reader, the story can begin. A little camera in the tip of the reader identifies words and symbols on the specially printed pages, giving kids lots of options. They can pick between starting a story at the beginning and having it read all the way through, playing a page at a time, or reading themselves and using the Tag reader to hear single, tricky words spoken aloud. This last option inspires kids to try reading books they might otherwise avoid, since the Tag reader is always there to help them out. Young readers are sure to enjoy the way character voices add drama to their favorite stories, the way touching certain pictures inspires quirky sound effects, and the leveled activities included in LeapFrog books. LeapFrog presents a library of books that are compatible with the Tag reader.  Fun and Educational! January 8, 2009

My son just turned 3 so I wasn't sure if he would get a lot out of the Tag System yet, but I was fascinated by the technology so I went ahead and got this for him for Christmas. He has played with it once or twice but lost interest quickly. If I sit down with him, it definitely retains his attention longer. The tag system is a great way for kids to start learning to read. For kids younger than the recommended age on the box, I think the tag system will get them started associating the written word with the words they hear.
I'm looking forward to working with him further on this and really think it will be a fun tool to start him down the road to reading.

Our 6 year old got his this fall for his birthday and it was obvious our 3 year old would need one this Christmas. They both love them, and will easily spend 30-60 minutes engrossed with a book with the. There's a T-REX book our 6 year old likes and along with her pink girl Tag our daughter got a favorite princess book.
Downsides:
There aren't enough books available to work with this. There needs to be a better variety of book choices.
These things eat AAA batteries. As small as it is, I expected it to be frugal on power but it isn't.
If you have any problems getting it to read concistently, make sure you're using it in good lighting.

I am not usually a fan of battery operated toys, but this one is fantastic. My 3yo daughter loves it! Easy to use with so many features. Excellent for in the car or anytime you need to occupy your child. Read stories, words, or play fun games. I thought my daughter might be too young for this, but she can operate it easily. You can only load a certain number of stories onto it, so I'd recommend only buying a few books to start. Easy to connect to internet and download audio for new books. My only gripe is the plastic screw where you put the batteries is not very sturdy and my screwdriver sort of "chewed" into it the first time I inserted batteries. Overall, I am very impressed with this product!

My daughter adores this toy, and I love it too! There are many ways to play with the reading system so she is never bored. I love to play with her when she is using the Tag system. It's really great when it actually reads the story with the Characters' actual voices, cool music, and sounds. At this point she is recognizing words from the books and associating them with words she sees everywhere (i.e. cereal boxes, stores, signs). She is already an excelerated reader in her Class and this is just the tool to help encourage her and make it fun. Great for long trips..and I have to say even with the room for only 5 books at a time I think that is plenty. There are 3 levels of games on every page, and a story, and they can click on any picture for sounds. They can then go word by word and learn to read and recognize words on their own. Overall great toy! I recommend purchasing the whole system with the carrying case!

My son thinks it's a toy but he just LOVES this! He already loves to read but this just really makes books come to life. I especially like that it has reading comprehension questions in it!
